Students engage in sustainable and responsible entrepreneurship
Tilburg University encourages student entrepreneurship and sustainable entrepreneurship. These aspects came together in the second Tilburg University Challenge with the theme: social responsibility. Two teams took home the three cash prizes. Tilburg University Magazine talked to the winners.
Grant interdisciplinary project conflict sustainable cities
Urban Europe has awarded Eva Wolf, Tobias Arnoldussen and Merlijn van Hulst of Tilburg Law School a grant of 1.2 million euros for their interdisciplinary research proposal into conflict for transformation towards more sustainable cities.
Presentation news university strategy
During the New Year's meeting the new Strategic Plan 'Weaving Minds and Characters: strategy towards 2027' was presented. Rector Magnificus Wim van de Donk, Vice Rector Magnificus Jantine Schuit and the deans explained the vision document.

Charity for charity fund
The Charitas Foundation and the Tilburg University Fund Foundation have established the Charity for Charity Fund (Charitas voor Charitas Fonds). The Charity for Charity Fund provides scholarships for women and women religious from emerging and developing countries, in order for them to follow a program at Tilburg University in the field of care & religious life.
Research on world cancer day
Within Tilburg University, many researchers are studying the psychosocial consequences of cancer and the information needs of patients. On World Cancer Day (February 4), we put a number of these studies in the spotlight.
Cris de Coeur for Tilburg Politicians
Opening Student Election Debate night, Rector Magnificus Wim van de Donk seized the opportunity to share three cries from the heart with the political parties attending the event. The three short texts concern key issues that Tilburg University is keen to see reflected in the city’s prospective administrative agreement.

International Women’s Day on transgressive behavior
(Sexually) transgressive behavior continues to be a difficult, loaded, and sensitive subject for men to talk about. That is the conclusion of TV show Brandpunt+ on International Women’s Day 2022. Social psychologist Ivana Vranjes studies this subject and emphasizes that is nevertheless important to continue the dialogue on this difficult topic.
Towards a smart and social energy transition
On March 15, various triple-helix organizations met with Tilburg University researchers for inspiring presentations and pitches. Afterwards, the participants entered into a dialogue with each other on today’s major issues.

Tilburg University scholars explain consequences war Ukraine
The war in Ukraine has overwhelmed and shocked its inhabitants and the world. Our scholars contribute to explaining the backgrounds and consequences from, for example, the perspective of European values, the consequences of economic sanctions, quiet diplomacy by the church and the impact on international trade.
TSHD Societal challenge
The TSHD Societal Challenge educates students to become critical professionals with societal impact. TSHD students gain experience in the professional field trough practical implementation of their academic knowledge and skills. Students worked in multidisciplinary teams, on societal challenges formulated by participating organizations.
ETZ Science Day
On ETZ Science Day 2022, Tranzo researchers presented three studies conducted as part of the Academic Collaborative Center on Work and Health in collaboration with researchers and care professionals of the ETZ hospital in Tilburg.

University medal and royal honor for Ernst Hirsch Ballin
On Friday, May 13, 2022, university professor Dr. Ernst Hirsch Ballin received the university medal for his many years of outstanding service to the university during his farewell from Tilburg University. In addition, the Mayor of Tilburg presented Professor Hirsch Ballin with the insigna of the royal honor conferred upon him: he was appointed a Commander in the Order of Orange-Nassau.
New book contribute to a sustainable future
Hunger, inequality, climate change… Today’s world faces many great challenges on individual, organizational and societal level. What role can organizations play in the solutions and how can new forms of organizing contribute? Organizational scientist Jörg Raab, Federica Angeli and Ashley Metz wrote a new book on organizing for Sustainable Development.
Retrospect Night University
After two years, Night University could take place again on Thursday, May 19. On the lively campus, departments, study associations and cooperation partners presented a cross section of the 'Tilburg sciences' in a light-hearted way. There were workshops, experiments, tours, lectures, interviews, debates and cultural performances.
New minor Artificial Intelligence
Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences will launch a new minor for anyone who wants to stay on top of the AI developments in their chosen field of study. The minor in Artificial Intelligence will be offered for the first time in the Fall semester of academic year 2022-2023. The minor welcomes students from all Bachelor's programs at Tilburg University.

Conny Rijken new National Rapporteur Trafficking in Human Beings and Sexual Violence against Children
Professor of Human Trafficking and Globalisation Conny Rijken will be the new National Rapporteur on Trafficking in Human Beings and Sexual Violence against Children, starting 1 September 2022. Her appointment was announced on Friday 10 June. She is the successor of Herman Bolhaar, who retired on 23 May 2022.
Data Science students perform data challenge for London Metropolitan Police
Students of the Joint Bachelor Data Science learn to connect theory to practice in three 'Data Challenge' courses. For these courses, students carry out a group project in which they work with real data, talk to real stakeholders and work on a real problem. This year, students worked with data from the London Metropolitan Police.
Grant winners put in the limelight
2021 was a great year for Tilburg University in terms of securing grants, national and international research grants. The invited winners jointly accounted for over €11 million. The winners and runner-ups were put in the limelight on Tuesday, June 28 at Auberge du Bonheur and warmly thanked for all their efforts to secure the funds.
Tilburg University and Centerdata sign agreement for closer collaboration
On June 30, Tilburg University and Centerdata have signed a partner agreement, improving the structure and strategy of the existing collaboration. Based on this sustainable strategic partnership, Centerdata may now call itself ‘Official Partner Tilburg University’.

Tilburg University Challenge Grande Finale
On Thursday, July 7, was the Grand Finale of the Tilburg University Challenge. From over 50 entries and 14 finalists who entered the competition, the prizes were awarded as follows. The Business Ready Award went to Mindful Sprint, the Ideation Award to Focus and the Audience Award to Eternal Books.
Science Quest podcast series
Tilburg University researchers are finding answers to questions related to questions in the area of the Humanities and Social Sciences that matter to us all. Questions on war and peace, the planet and our wallets, care and its organization, big data and dating. In this podcast series (in Dutch), they discuss the latest, most interesting and exciting insights from their own research, aimed at a wide audience.

Tilburg University Challenge winners
Zoia Shakhova (30) won first prize with her Mindful Sprint in the Business Ready category. Anita Vrins (21), Jos Prinsen (21), and their team members came in first in the Ideation category with their innovative brain computer FOCUS. What did these students learn from participating in the Tilburg University Challenge?
"Krapte snapte"
Professor of Labor Market Studies and Tilburg City Professor Ton Wilthagen has made a song, together with Tilburg top musicians as part of project ensemble Wonderwerk, on the shortages on the labor market. Wilthagen: “The nice thing is that, for once, it is not a song about people on the dole (Koos werkeloos, Sollicitere), but about vacancies.”

Universities and Province of Noord-Brabant to deploy knowledge to address Brabant issues
The Province of Noord-Brabant and the Brabant research universities and universities of applied sciences have joined forces to reinforce the future economic growth in Brabant and make sure that sufficient and appropriately qualified staff is available to facilitate this growth. Today they have signed a Knowledge Pact for Higher Education in Brabant (Kennispact HO Brabant) to boost entrepreneurship, lifelong learning, and knowledge development.
Induction Wall of Fame
Every year, new students and alumni are added to the Wall of Fame in the Sports Center for exceptional achievements they have made in top-level sports combined with their academic careers at Tilburg University. This year, alumnus Joeri Bruschinski and Economics student Max Warmerdam received the honor of being added to the Wall of Fame, joining the illustrious company of champions.
Evangelia Demerouti new member of the Board of Governors
Prof. Evangelia Demerouti has been appointed as a new member of Tilburg University's Board of Governors, effective October 1, 2022. Dr. Evangelia Demerouti is a full professor at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). The Board of Governors monitors the university’s objectives and functions as a board of overseers.

Pieter Huisman reappointed to Education Council
Prof. Pieter Huisman, professor of Education Law at Tilburg Law School, has been reappointed to the Education Council for four years from January 2023. The Council of Ministers has agreed to this, the Education Council announced on Oct. 21, 2022.
Toolkit for Blended Learning: How to make courses future-proof
Online education during the COVID-19 pandemic has led to developments towards blended learning. We spoke with Dr. Sabita Soedamah-Muthu, instructor and academic director of the Psychology Bachelor’s program (Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences), who created a Blended Learning Toolkit to design high-quality and future-proof courses.
Textile collection points on campus
Two textile bins have been placed on campus at the CUBE Building and Restaurant Building where used clothing can be dropped off. The bins have been placed as part of promoting a sustainable, circular economy and are the result of the winner of the Deans Den of the Opening Academic Year 2021.

Serious Disaster in My Backyard game broadens students’ perspective
One of the first and surprising classes Master’s students of Information Management take at the start of the academic year is devoted to playing the serious Disaster in My Backyard game. In a simulated disaster area, students set to work applying theory to a realistic societal situation.
European agreement steps up Recognition & Rewards culture change
On November 10, 2022, Rector Magnificus Wim van de Donk signed the European Agreement on Reforming Research Assessment. This agreement sets a shared direction for changes in assessing research. Paving the way for the culture change we aim to achieve with Recognition & Rewards, the agreement levels the international playing field.
Elisabeth Huis in ‘t Veld presents her research in Het Klokhuis
Researcher Elisabeth Huis in ’t Veld studies needle-induced fear and fainting and developed an app, AINAR: a game to help children and grown-ups to conquer their needle fear. She was invited to talk about it in the documentary TV show for school children, Het Klokhuis.
We UNiTE to end violence against women
Tilburg University supports the global Orange the World campaign between November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and December 10, Human Rights Day. In that 16-day period, some of Tilburg University’s buildings, like those of hundreds of other organizations in the Netherlands, light up orange to symbolize a brighter future, free of violence.

Presentation inspiration guide 'Goed op weg'
Tilburg University, AWVN and ABU created the inspiration guide 'Goed op weg', a publication with recommendations, lessons and experiences to help people smoothly cross over to other work. SER president and professor of broad welfare Kim Putters accepted the first copy on Wednesday, November 30.
