Addiction

At the Academic Collaborative Center Addiction, we aim for knowledge development and knowledge sharing on risk factors, interventions, and policies in the area of addiction care and prevention. Most projects of the collaborative center are in the field of prevention related to risky and problematic alcohol use and smoke-free environments. Other topics include supportive care in recovery for problematic addictions and alcohol and drug policy.

The Academic Collaborative Center was not idle in 2022, which is shown by the list of issues and research themes they were fully engaged in over the past year:

  • Smoke-free Sports for a smoke-free generation

  • Quit Smoking in the neighborhood

  • Evaluation of IkPas

  • Effective elements of alcohol interventions for older adults

  • Early detection of alcohol problems in second-line settings

  • Early detection of alcohol problems regarding older adults

  • Healthy Campus/student well-being

  • Fitphone: students and their phone behavior

  • Recovery from drug addiction

  • Debt problems of probation clients

  • The influence of living environment for girls in residential youth care

All these activities and efforts lead to several highlights in 2022. For example, Henk Garretsen received a royal award for all his good work. In honor of this appointment, the First Henk Garretsen lecture was organized to perpetuate his legacy, even as professor emeritus. The press release and video recording of this lecture can be found on the events page.

As a result of developments within the Second Line Working Group of the Samenwerkingsverband Vroegsignalering Alcoholproblematiek ((SVA) Alcohol Early detection Alliance), State Secretary Maarten van Ooijen (Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport) visited the Jeroen Bosch Hospital. Andrea Rozema (Second Line Working Group) and science practitioner Jacqueline Bisschop showed the State Secretary around. Read the pearl Early Detection in Hospitals for more information.

A special issue of the Tijdschrift voor Gezondheidswetenschappen (TSG) was created under the editorship of Rob Bovens and Andrea Rozema. During Maarten van Ooijen's visit to the Jeroen Bosch Hospital, the first printed TSG special issue(new window) was presented to him.

In the area of Smoke-Free Sports, it was also a successful year! Smoke-Free Sports was officially recognized as an intervention by the RIVM and received the level Well Substantiated. Also, Heike Garritsen (external PhD researcher) won the National Tobacco Control Research Award (see press release(new window)). Read all developments on Smoke-Free Sports in the pearl.

At the end of 2022, Gercoline van Beek defended her thesis “Mea Culpa: The complexity of financial problems among probation clients(new window)”. That the complexity of these financial problems and the resulting vicious circle plays a role in society is evident from the amount of media attention for this topic. Utrecht University of Applied Sciences wrote a beautiful article on Building your life with debts after detention(new window). Zorg&Sociaal web(new window) also published about this topic, an article appeared in Trouw (new window)and Gercoline was a guest on NPO Radio 1(new window)
