Tranzo Pearl | Experience knowledge of next of kin

Relatives are often lifelong and unconditionally involved in the care and support of their family member with an intellectual disability. They have unique experience knowledge that is valuable to care professionals. Good cooperation between care professionals and relatives is, therefore, very important so that the care can best meet the needs of people with intellectual disabilities. But how can cooperation best be designed and how can the experience knowledge of next of kin best be utilized so that it contributes to the quality of care for their family member with intellectual disabilities?

With the project Experience Knowledge of Next of Kin,” the Academic Collaborative Center Living with an intellectual disability (AWVB) contributes to the development of more scientific research on the value and use of this experience knowledge of the next of kin of people with intellectual disabilities. Specifically, there is a focus on the needs that next of kin have in working with healthcare professionals, where the use of experience knowledge can have a valuable contribution. Together with stakeholders, the AWVB is developing a range of support possibilities for next of kin and care professionals based on new insights.

The AWVB aims to contribute to the quality of life and care for people with intellectual disabilities and their next of kin. This care is shaped in the cooperation between the person with an intellectual disability, their relatives, and care professionals. The wishes and needs of people with intellectual disabilities and those of their next of kin are the starting point.
