Tranzo Pearl | Effects pandemic on mental health workers

A scientific attitude is important in the professional field of psychologists and educators. A critical, inquisitive view and a scientific attitude contribute to evidence-based practice and thus to good care. RINO Zuid likes to highlight the appreciation for practice-oriented scientific research and, therefore, organizes the election of the RINO Zuid Research Award 2022. With this, they are looking for the research with the most impact on the GGZ practice.

Science practitioners Anneloes van den Broek and Lars de Vroege (both senior researchers at the Academic Collaborative Center Mental Health) won the third prize with their research(new window) on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of GGZ workers. A wonderful recognition and appreciation of this necessary research. The research, focused on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, provides more insight into the mental health effects of the pandemic on GGZ professionals. For example, people were found to have more stress-related complaints and some showed somberness symptoms. At the same time, more clients with complaints as a direct and indirect result of the COVID-19 pandemic reported to the mental health system. This created additional work pressure in a sector where waiting lists were already long.

Based on the outcomes, concrete measures can be taken for professionals. To prevent dropout and/or departure of healthcare professionals from the GGZ, it is necessary to learn how to deal with the consequences of the pandemic in the consulting room and to prevent stress and burnout symptoms with prevention measures.

To support the driven healthcare professionals in the GGZ and encourage resilience, the research will continue. This will involve ongoing (active) monitoring and the creation of support and prevention modules for healthcare professionals in the GGZ.
