Tranzo Pearl | Autonomy Calendar

How can you have a discussion about having your autonomy in the nursing home? The Autonomy Calendar was developed for that purpose. With the calendar, healthcare professionals have a practical tool they can use to help older adults promote autonomy. Due to the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it is sometimes difficult to stop and reflect. This calendar encourages care professionals to stop and think on a daily basis, and it can be the start of a valuable conversation with a resident or colleague.

Calendar development
Jolande van Loon is conducting PhD research on the autonomy of people with a somatic condition in the nursing home. Her research was the subject of "The Workplace: I will determine that myself!" on October 5, 2021. A creative day where healthcare professionals and students got to work with the results of Jolanda's research. They were challenged to develop an idea and develop it into a “shitty prototype.” One of the winning ideas of this day was a reflection card game to create awareness and reflect on increasing people’s autonomy. We developed this idea in co-creation with the winning team and put it in another format, namely a (daily) calendar. Together with Jolande, the winning group, other healthcare professionals, and older people, the Academic Collaborative Center Care for Older Adults created the content and design. With all these forces combined, the Autonomy Calendar was developed!

By December 2022, 1,500 calendars had already been widely distributed to all care teams of the 10 care for older adults organizations that are partners in the Academic Collaborative Center Care for Older Adults. Still numerous requests are made by care organizations or care workers outside the Collaborative Center’s partner organizations.
