Quality of healthcare providers and systems & Health Economics

Today, health care is a complex system, with crucial roles for patients, physicians, and healthcare organizations. Making this complicated system future-proof requires an understanding of factors that influence the quality of care in the chain, which is the focus of our Academic Collaborative Center Quality of healthcare providers and systems (Kwaliteit van Huisartsen- en Ziekenhuiszorg (KHZ)).

Within the Collaborative Center, Prof. Bert Meijboom focuses on the optimal coordination of sub-processes in health care, with room for choices and preferences of individual patients, from the perspective of Operations Management. Prof. Roland Friele focuses on the question of how legislation and regulations can contribute to quality, safety, and accessibility, with particular attention to situations where something has gone wrong. Prof. Esther de Vries studies the meaning of network care, in particular for people who deviate from “the average patient.” She focuses specifically on the increasing data-driven nature of health care. For her research she works closely with Prof. Robert Verheij. He focuses on the transparency of care from the patient's perspective. In particular, he studies the possibilities offered by huge amounts of data generated by the healthcare system itself, and the conditions for use. Prof. Johan Polder brings in the economic perspective and studies the affordability of health care, even in the future. He applies that perspective to the entire chain: from prevention to long-term care, including the role of insurance organizations. Since 2022, Prof. Anne Marie Weggelaar MCM, also contributes to our Academic Collaborative Center. She studies transformation and innovation of health care, paying special attention to the role of top-level clinical hospitals.

Several of our professors work at national institutions. This means that in our Collaborative Center we also focus on issues of a national level. For example, we use datasets from healthcare practice to answer questions about package management for the Healthcare Institute. Legislation evaluations commissioned by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport provide insight into the impact of legislation and regulations in health care. Analyses of healthcare spending provide insight into the sustainability of the system and the underlying solidarity.

The strength of our Academic Collaborative Center ultimately lies in the combination of different knowledge domains and collaboration at the national level, which naturally also provides a framework for research in the region. But, just as relevant, knowledge from the region finds its way into research at the national level.
